Why Most First Flights Fall Short

You’ve always wanted to know what it’s like to fly. However, most “discovery flights” simply allow you to ride shotgun while the instructor handles the flying. You leave with some photos but no real sense of whether you can do it. That’s not a discovery. That’s a sightseeing tour.

What Makes One Source Aviation Different?

At One Source Aviation in Van Nuys, we believe one thing:

Anyone can learn to fly — with the right experience from Day One.

That’s why we created the Pilot Induction Process — a first-flight protocol designed to:

✅ Build your confidence
✅ Engage you step-by-step
✅ And give you your first real taste of what it’s like to be a pilot — not just a passenger.

STILL NOT SURE?

Frequently Asked Questions

👉 Your questions, answered - so you can apply with confidence before this month’s intake closes.

Do I need any prior flying experience?

Nope! The Street to Seat program is designed specifically for beginners. Most of our students have never even sat in a cockpit before. From day one, you’ll be learning alongside highly trained instructors who guide you step by step until you’re ready for your first solo flight.

Do I need a medical check before I start?

NO, you can begin your training right away without a medical certificate - no need to delay your first lessons.

But here’s the important part: before your first solo flight, you must hold a valid FAA medical certificate (at least a Class 3). You’ll also need a student pilot certificate and a government-issued photo ID.

The good news is, the medical is a straightforward process, and we’ll guide you through it when the time comes. Many students schedule it within their first few weeks of training so everything is ready well before solo.

Is there an age limit?

There is an age limit of 16 years for solo flight. We’ve trained students as young as 11 and as seasoned as 70+. If you’re healthy enough to sit in an aircraft and take instructions, you can fly. There’s no “too young” or “too old” when it comes to chasing the dream of flight.

What is a Discovery Flight?

A Discovery Flight is a hands-on flying experience with a certified instructor. You’ll do a pre-flight briefing, get in the cockpit, and get to do the take-off with instructor assistance (with the instructor beside you). It’s the perfect way to see what flying is really like before committing to the full program.

What if I’m nervous about flying?

That’s completely normal! Most students feel a little anxious on day one. Our instructors are patient, supportive, and experienced in helping beginners build confidence. By the time you reach your solo, you’ll be amazed at how natural it feels.

What happens after I complete my solo flight?

That’s up to you! Many students continue training toward their full Private Pilot Licence or even continue to Commercial, while others simply tick “flying an aircraft solo” off their bucket list. Either way, your first solo is a milestone you’ll never forget - and it’s yours for life.

Do I get a refund if I change my mind?

Seats are limited, so once you’ve secured your spot, we can’t offer refunds. If something unexpected comes up, we’ll do our best to move you into the next cohort.

What if the weather delays my training?

Weather rarely affects lesson scheduling, but our monthly cohort model allows flexibility. If delays occur, we work with you to make up the time so you still stay on track toward your solo.
